Evolution and extinction dynamics in

چکیده
After an introductory section summarizing the paleontological data and some of their theoretical descriptions, we describe thèreset' model and its (in part analytically soluble) mean eld version, which have been brieey introduced in Letterss1, 2]. Macroevolution is considered as a problem of stochastic dynamics in a system with many competing agents. Evolutionary events (speciations and extinctions) are triggered by tness records found by random exploration of the agents' tness landscapes. As a consequence, the average tness in the system increases logarithmically with time, while the rate of extinction steadily decreases. This non-stationary dynamics is studied by numerical simulations and, in a simpler mean eld version, analytically. We also consider the eeect of externally added`mass' extinctions. The predictions for various quantities of paleontological interest (lifetime distribution, distribution of event sizes and behavior of the rate of extinction) are robust and in good agreement with available data.

Plant population dynamics, pollinator foraging, and the selection of self-fertilization.
Many flowering plants rely on pollinators, self-fertilization, or both for reproduction. We model the consequences of these features for plant population dynamics and mating system evolution. Our mating systems-based population dynamics model includes an Allee effect. This often leads to an extinction threshold, defined as a density below which population densities decrease. Reliance on general...
متن کاملSelection-Driven Extinction Dynamics for Group II Introns in Enterobacteriales
Transposable elements (TEs) are one of the major driving forces of genome evolution, raising the question of the long-term dynamics underlying their evolutionary success. Some TEs were proposed to evolve under a pattern of periodic extinctions-recolonizations, in which elements recurrently invade and quickly proliferate within their host genomes, then start to disappear until total extinction. ...
متن کاملBalancing biodiversity in a changing environment: extinction debt, immigration credit and species turnover.
Here, we outline a conceptual framework for biodiversity dynamics following environmental change. The model incorporates lags in extinction and immigration, which lead to extinction debt and immigration credit, respectively. Collectively, these concepts enable a balanced consideration of changes in biodiversity following climate change, habitat fragmentation and other forcing events. They also ...
متن کاملHost population bottlenecks drive parasite extinction during antagonistic coevolution
Host-parasite interactions are often characterized by large fluctuations in host population size, and we investigated how such host bottlenecks affected coevolution between a bacterium and a virus. Previous theory suggests that host bottlenecks should provide parasites with an evolutionary advantage, but instead we found that phages were rapidly driven to extinction when coevolving with hosts e...
متن کاملWhen Does Evolution by Natural Selection Prevent Extinction?
Understanding population responses to novel environments is a central concern of both evolutionary biology and ecology (Maynard Smith 1989; Bradshaw 1991; Hoffman and Parsons 1991; Peters and Lovejoy 1992; Kareiva et al. 1993). Populations subject to substantial environmental stress, such as occurs during colonization attempts, human-mediated introductions or reintroductions, orglobal climatic ...
متن کاملFood Web Structure and the Evolution of Ecological Communities
Simulations of the coevolution of many interacting species are performed using the Webworld model. The model has a realistic set of predator-prey equations that describe the population dynamics of the species for any structure of the food web. The equations account for competition between species for the same resources, and for the diet choice of predators between alternative prey according to ...
